Chapter Fifteen

Danielle woke up the next afternoon and instantly chastised herself for sleeping so late. She threw on an oversized T-shirt and some athletic shorts, brushed her teeth and hair, and padded into the living room to find Talitha buzzing about the kitchen. She was softly singing a song that Danielle recognized but couldn’t quite place.

“Hey, what are you doing?”

Talitha jumped. “Oh goodness. You scared me.” Her fair cheeks instantly turned bright red. “I was thinking I would bake some cookies. I’m good at baking.”

Danielle stretched, trying to get her body to wake up. “Really? That’s cool. Where’s Brett?”

“He’s in the garage fiddling with his boat. He said this weekend he’d take us to the lake. Doesn’t that sound like fun?” Talitha’s excitement shone through, and it made her glow. Danielle couldn’t believe what a difference just a couple of days had made.

“Well, you get back to your baking. I’m going to go chat with the man of the house.”

“Okay,” she said joyously.

As Danielle started for the garage, Talitha started singing again, and this time Danielle instantly recognized the song. It was “Blessed Poison,” only she wasn’t singing it right. It was too slow. She had only played it that way once.

“Where did you hear that?”

Talitha jumped again. “What?”

“That song. Where did you hear that song?”

Talitha’s face went slack, and it dawned on Danielle that she probably thought she’d made some sort of terrible error. But Danielle was focused on other things. “Um, Brett played it for me last night. It’s one of yours, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it’s one of mine,” she hissed. “How did he play it for you? On his computer?”

“Um...YouTube?”

“I knew it.” She stormed towards the garage and flung the door open. Brett was couched in the boat, the engine cover off. He had a smear of grease across his forehead. “You asshole.”

Brett let the crescent wrench he was holding go, and it clambered to the deck of the boat. “What? What are you talking about?”

“You posted that, didn’t you? I expressly told you not to. You told me you deleted it. You lying sack of shit.”

“I didn’t lie.” He struggled to his feet.

“Save your bullshit,” Danielle snapped. “I can’t believe I trusted you. I must be losing my mind.” She stormed out of the garage with Brett desperately scrambling out of the boat to catch up.

“Wait, Danielle. Just listen to me.” He finally caught up to her in the living room and spun her around by her arm. Behind them, Talitha stood shocked in the kitchen, cradling a mixing bowl in the crook of her arm. “Would you just wait a minute?”

“Why, so you can spin some crock of shit? Why would I believe anything you say to me now?”

Brett sighed and wiped at his sweaty brow. “Why don’t you just shut up for half a second and let me tell you what happened? I think you owe me that much.”

“I don’t owe you anything,” she said, knowing that was a lie.

“Come. Sit.” Brett took Danielle by the elbow and gently led her to the couch.
